Mission Statement

Renaissance’s mission is to provide fun, confidence-boosting experiences that allow children to explore, study, and share multimedia technologies. We build children's confidence by showing them how to create something personal and special by acquiring challenging and new multimedia skills. We aim to make every one of our students happy through positive reinforcement, special recognition, and humor. Last and foremost, as teachers, we share a common mission with all teachers to nurture the knowledge of students.

We take the sometimes difficult topics of technology and media, and make them fun, easy to understand, and most importantly, connected to the world around them.

Our Story

Renaissance is a program designed by educator Linda Klages Ph.D., mom and former Principal and Master Teacher in private schools. Renaissance Camps and Enrichment Programs was the first program of it’s kind in Northern Virginia. Linda designed a robotics curriculum for elementary students while working on her Ph.D. She was looking for a way to teach robotics to young children and asked a manager at a local Lego store if Lego offered any robotics kits for children less than 10 years of age. She was told that Lego would be coming out with a new educational robotics kit for young children in April 2010. As soon as the kit was available, Linda ordered one kit and tried it. Then, she had an “aha” moment and realized immediately that the Lego Educational We-Do robotics kit would be perfect for younger students. She decided to offer a Lego Camp that summer (2010) and to introduce robotics to kids. She told some moms about the camps the word spread quickly. Way back in 2009, there were no Lego Camps of any kind in Northern Virginia. Families all over Northern Virginia and Maryland registered for Renaissance Camps in the summer of 2010. Over the years, Renaissance has grown and added cutting edge digital media classes including Minecraftedu, American Girl Art Camps and more. We have expanded to three locations and met wonderful, talented children and families from all over Northern Virginia and Maryland. We have watched as many Lego Camps opened throughout the area over the years and we are still the first to offer a combination of technology camps that are innovative and engage kids thoroughly every summer.

The children who have come to us for years are older now. We have evolved over the years and developed innovative robotics and tech programs that meet the needs of older children. You might say that as our original kids grew up, so did we. Of course, we still love meeting new campers and their families. We listen to our tech savvy kids and we respond and know what they love. That is why our programs have expanded over the years. This year we will add amazing new coding programs to our camps.

As a teacher and former Head of School at private top tier schools, Linda has always brought the newest and most innovative programs to students. But, more important than our extraordinary curriculum is our talented, nurturing staff. Kids and parents connect with our exceptional staff who give 150% to our great campers every summer. We are proud of the individual attention that all of our great instructors give to every child. We feel supremely confident in our students because we know our instructors and staff are fun, caring, and knowledgeable. Every professional involved with Renaissance believes whole-heartedly in the value of technology in education, and will work with students as they gain self-confidence finding success with state-of-the-art media. It's an amazing thing to see.

Parents feel that something special is going on when they pick up their children at the end of the day. The excitement of completing challenges and successfully accomplishing unbelievable technology projects fills our kids with pride and satisfaction. The most amazing thing is that they were having fun all day building robots, programming, designing videos and making movies, etc. and at the end of the day, they are still ready for more!

Back in 2010 at its creation, Renaissance was just one small Lego Robotics Camp. Since then, Renaissance has grown to three locations and enriched thousands of children in summer camps and in schools. We have watched our kids grow and change over the years and we love them all! It is our mission to spark their creativity and help to develop the skills that will serve every student in the future. As new developments in technology are developed, Renaissance will provide programs that engage and excite kids because we know that, “You Only Educate A Child Once!”
